Collecting Pop Tabs
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Iowa (RMHC-EI) is excited to kick off our fifth annual Pop Tab Collection Contest! Our goal is to once again challenge Eastern Iowa elementary schools to compete against each other in collecting pop tabs. We also hope to encourage kids to learn about recycling and to contribute back to their community. Schools will have until April 5, 2013 to collect and return their pop tabs. Boxes for collecting pop tabs will be placed in the Amana Library.

Interesting Note: The tab is higher grade aluminum than the can, resulting in a higher dollar return per pound than cans. The tabs are sent to a recycling center where they are weighed. RMHC is paid by the recycling center according to the pounds of pull tabs collected (approximately $0.60 per pound).

You are helping children and their families in their time of need. The RMHC generates more than $9000 per year from pop tabs!

Four Ways to Save for Library Needs
The library takes part in several collection programs that make use of items normally discarded. The items can be converted to cash or materials that can be used in the library.

Campbell's Labels For Education
We need the part of the label with the Campbell's kid and the barcode. Other products in the Campbell's program are Prego, Spagettios, Pepperidge Farm, Franco American and Swanson. More information at: www.labelsforeducation.com

Save Box Tops for Education
Labels from General Mills, Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, Ziploc, Kleenex and Hefty products can be converted to cash for the library. In the past year, we have collected enough box tops to earn $ 897.00. Proceeds from Box Tops for Education go into an activity account and are used for projects that benefit all students in the school. More details at: boxtops4education.com

Save used ink and toner cartridges from printers
These cartridges are recycled and the library receives a monetary allowance for each unit recycled.

Movie Rentals

New release movies remain $2 overnight and $2.50 for the weekend. Older movies are $1 overnight and .50 for each additional day. We still have a good selection of VHS at $1 for 3 days.

To avoid the late fees, please be sure that the video or DVD is returned directly to the library and NOT in the classroom bin.

Library Hours during bad weather
When the weather is not safe for travel, please call the library at (319) 622-3192 to see if we are open or have a special closing time for that day.

Library Etiquette Review
To make library visits pleasant for everyone, all patrons will be asked to follow these few simple rules of library etiquette:

1. No food or drink in the library.
2. Shoes and shirts must be worn.
3. No wet clothing, wet towels, or wet bags in the library.
4. Children under the age of 10 should be accompanied by
adults.

Please remember that the library is intended to be a place where people can quietly read and check out materials.

Review of Library Policies
These are the policies for checking out library materials:
1) Students may check out 1,2, or 3 items when their class comes to the library.
2) Students may have up to six items checked out at one time.
3) Students may not check out anything new (or renew another item) if they have something that is overdue.

These policies are designed to help students return books on time so that the books are not lost. The library staff appreciates everyone’s efforts in getting materials returned to the library on time.

Also, please remember that all videos and DVD’s should be returned directly to the library drop-box or desk and not to the classroom.

Internet Use
Please remember public library patrons under the age of 14 must have parental permission to use the Internet. Parents can stop in the library to sign a permission slip. The library staff does not supervise the use of the Internet, so parents must decide if their children can use it.

  Login for teachers and students to access the EBSCO host products that GWAEA has purchased for your school. These products include full-text periodical appropriate for elementary, middle and high school students. In addition, teachers will have full access to the professional collection and the ERIC database.
  
  In EBSCO there are 6 areas of research including: Searchasaurus for kids. EBSCOhost: full text periodical databases, includes 20 subject specific databases. Auto Repair Reference Center: which include everything you ever wanted to know about fixing your vehicle. Novelist: summaries, authors, book reviews, similar titles/authors

  SIRS Discoverer Deluxe on the Web is an award-winning interactive reference database for elementary and middle school aged children, as well as for student with limited English at the high school level. This online resource is designed to develop research, reading, writing, language and computer skills.
