Paul Rogers and Susan Schwartz-Rogers
The Hall of Fame was created in 2001 by the Clear Creek Amana School Board and the Clear Creek Amana School Foundation Board of Directors to honor those who have made significant and lasting contributions to the Clear Creek Amana School District and to the community.
On Thursday, September 27, 2007, the Clear Creek Amana Foundation honored two individuals who, through outstanding service and dedication, met the challenge of service, giving of themselves to insure that our school and our children achieve excellence.
Paul Rogers and Susan Schwartz-Rogers have been active volunteers from the time their kids enrolled in CCA in 1984. Though all three sons have long graduated, they have given their time and talents to F.A.M.E., the fine arts booster group at the school, including serving as co-chairs of the annual fundraiser. Susan has also served as treasurer and publicity person for F.A.M.E. Both have served on numerous committees at CCA. Paul has served on several facilities committees, an administrative search committee, was a co-chair of the Citizen’s Consolidation Committee at the time of the consolidation of the Amana and Clear Creek School Districts, and served on the CCA School Board for seven years, serving as President the last year. While on the school board, Paul helped with the transition from two school districts to one consolidated district, the additions at all three sites, the rebuilding at Oxford after the straight line winds, and the purchase of the land next to the high school in Tiffin where building is currently in progress. For several years, he organized a fundraising basketball game to benefit the science programs in the district and continues to assist the science programs whenever possible. For his volunteer service, Paul received the Friend of Education from the CCA Education Association and an Award of Merit from the Iowa Association of School Boards. Susan served on the Citizen’s Consolidation Committee prior to the consolidation of the Amana and Clear Creek School Districts. She has also served on CCA Curriculum Committees and Facilities Committees. In an effort to show our students that music is something that can be enjoyed lifelong, they helped to found and continue to maintain the Clear Creek Amana Community Chorus, which gives all those high school age and older a place to experience a variety of styles of vocal music.
Music plays an important role in the lives of both Paul and Susan. Paul sings with several different groups including the Clear Creek Amana Community Chorus, the Gloria Dei Senior Choir and the Heartbeats, a volunteer choir at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Susan sings with the Clear Creek Amana Community Chorus and the Gloria Dei Senior Choir. Both Paul and Susan are active in their church Gloria Dei Lutheran, where in addition to singing with the choir, they have worked with youth as youth group leaders and mentors for the acolytes ever since their sons were young. Susan served six years on the church council and has served on several search committees. They have both served on the Youth Ministries Committee and continue serving on the Worship & Music Committee. Both are active blood donors with Paul having donated numerous gallons of blood over the years. They encourage others to donate and two of their sons donate.
Both have been active with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Paul started his adult Scouting career with Tiger Cubs with Pack 222 in Oxford, where he also served as a den leader and Cubmaster for Pack 222. Paul then moved to Boy Scout Troop 203 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where he served as an Assistant Scoutmaster and continues to serve as Scoutmaster. Susan has served as an active committee member with both Cub Scout Pack 222 and Boy Scout Troop 203. They are both proud that all three of their sons joined Paul in becoming Eagle Scouts.
Paul and Susan are the parents of three sons whose entire K-12 educational careers were spent in the Clear Creek Amana School System. Ben graduated in 1997 from CCA, from the University of Iowa in 2002 with degrees in Computer Science and Physics with a minor in Math, and is currently enrolled in the University of Iowa MBA program. He works for the Psychiatry Department at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
He is married to Kathy Huang-Rogers. Justin, who graduated in 1999 from CCA, was very active in the arts—band, chorus and drama—while at CCA. Justin attended the University of Iowa and works as a Program Associate in the Biochemistry Stores at the University of Iowa. Jacob, who graduated in 2002 from CCA, attended the University of Iowa graduating in 2007 with an Environmental Science degree. He got married in August to Laura Maschmann and is working at Biochemistry Stores while looking for a job in his field.
Paul lived on a farm near Greenfield in southwest Iowa until graduating from Greenfield High School in 1970. While growing up, Paul was active in Boy Scouts attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. In high school, Paul sang with several groups and was selected to perform as tenor at All-State his senior year. Paul has three brothers.
Susan lived in several places in Iowa while growing up as her Dad was an educator and moved about. Susan was able to stay involved in Girl Scouts at the various places she lived. Eventually her parents moved to their hometown of Greenfield, Iowa, where she met Paul. Susan graduated with the Greenfield High School class of 1972 as Salutatorian. While in high school, Susan was active in vocal music, speech and drama-going to state contest several times in speech. After graduation from high school, Susan spent the summer as an exchange student in San Salvador, El Salvador. Susan has four younger brothers.
Both Paul and Susan came to the Iowa City area to go to the University of Iowa and loved it so much they decided it would be a great place to raise their family. In 1979, they purchased a trailer in Western Hills Mobile Home Park and in 1988 moved to their current home on Half Moon Avenue.
Paul graduated from the University of Iowa with a General Science degree and has spent most of his career as a research assistant with the Biochemistry Department at the University of Iowa. He currently manages maintenance for three of the University of Iowa College of Medicine Core Facilities. Susan has a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Education and a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Iowa. She works as a medical librarian for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Paul and Susan love to travel and made a commitment to give their sons a chance to see the rest of the United States. Paul and Susan took their sons to every state that you could drive to in the United States, including a five-week trip to Alaska with two of Susan’s brothers and families to visit a brother and family who were living there. In honor of their 30th wedding anniversary, Susan and Paul flew to Hawaii and made their dream of visiting all 50 states a reality.
In their spare time, Paul collects stamps and enjoys pyrotechnics while Susan enjoys genealogy. Paul has always been very adept at doing projects including building play equipment for the boys. He has recently branched out and has discovered that he really enjoys tiling—having recently completed a new kitchen floor and backsplash with plans to do more. To relax, both Paul and Susan enjoy playing racquetball. For the last five years, Paul and Susan have been honored to join their sons and friends in weekly walleyball games.
Congratulations on being inducted into the 2007 CCA Foundation Hall of Fame!
